10 Tips for Family Caregivers
By Presidential Proclamation, November is National Caregivers Month, a time when “we reaffirm our support for those who give of themselves to be there for their family, friends, and neighbors in challenging times,” a time to “lift up those who work to tirelessly advance the health and wellness of those they love.”
During this time, we like to remind people that those they love need the basic four documents of planning one’s later years: a last will and testament (or a revocable living trust), a durable power of attorney for business matters, a health care power of attorney, and a living will.
10 Tips for Family Caregivers:
- Seek support from other caregivers. You are not alone!
- Take care of your own health so that you can be strong enough to take care of your loved one.
- Accept offers of help and suggest specific things people can do to help you.
- Learn how to communicate effectively with doctors.
- Caregiving is hard work so take rest breaks often.
- Watch out for signs of depression and don’t delay getting professional help when you need it.
- Be open to new technologies that can help you care for your loved one.
- Organize medical information so it’s up to date and easy to find.
- Make sure legal documents are in order.
- Give yourself credit for doing the best you can in one of the toughest jobs there is!
The above are just a few tips to make you and your loved one’s life easier. If you need help with any of the legal work, or just want to discuss things with an experienced family, elder, and estate planning attorney; please don’t hesitate to contact us.
